Topic: PAE Living Building Tour
Presenter: PAE Architects
The PAE Living Building is the largest building in the world working towards obtaining a living building certification. It is a $40.2-million office/retail development engineered to stand for 500 years. All its systems are expected to carry on following a Cascadia subduction zone-level seismic event.
Join us on a tour to see how the specialty systems were constructed. The building is designed to collect and treat 100 percent of its water on-site. The PAE Living Building contains the first commercial installation in the Americas of a nutrient recovery system that will produce agriculture-grade fertilizer from nutrient-rich urine and the first large-scale commercial installation of vacuum-flush toilets. The composted waste is shoveled out into buckets and taken off-site to be used as fertilizer. The residual liquid “leachate” is drained underground into a 3,000-gallon recovery tank, where two-thirds of it will be pumped out by a truck regularly for fertilizer elsewhere.
The Mechanical Systems include a dual heating/cooling water system to feed radiant floor on floors 2-5, LG VRF system with heat recovery boxes serving 1st floor and individual FCUs and core “built up” AHUs for floors 2-5 with Dx coils and air to air heat recovery.
